THE HOVERING EYE OF the STORM Theory, the BULL'S EYES and the MIND'S EYE Theories





Stories evolve in the social sciences, and generally in science. And they evolve following conditions, both extrinsically and intrinsically. And the different checklists of stories condition a specific story as they relate to it. In this case, the Staircase checklists of stories move in the storm following which story one is focusing on, and they move the story. At every step of the staircase there's another story, and there another storm, another bull's eyes, in which there's yet another one as far as the eye can see: the Mind's eye that is. And a snow ball effect adds to that picture, growing from outside as much from inside in intimate interactions between the exterior and the interior.

It takes the mutual effects of both external and internal factors to move a story, following patterns of interactions that need modeling for the right insights to come to light. If all the known apparatus of Social Science Methodology is still relevant, there's something to be said about the effect of a multiplicity of factors coming to bear on a story at a precise moment, moving the specific story by the sheer weight of their interactions, not just the weight but the kinds of interactions that weigh in, forming the Eye of the Storm. And then following the focus of the story, these interactions form the bull's eyes of the story influencing the internal factors determining the driving force behind the story that may change at different moments, depending of what the mind is concerned with at the moment: the Mind's Eye looking.

So the Eye of the Storm Theory looks at these interactions at every step in the Staircase checklists of Stories as they appear and disappear in the evolution of the specific story, creating and moving the conditions that determine what pushes the story at it evolves: the Bull's eyes with the Mind's eye focusing attention and eliciting a story. Thus modeling is always at stake and gives meaning to all the methods used, as long as the focus is more on the modeling than on the techniques, as there's always a story to be told.

The issue is how encompassing the story is, as it is one thing to qualify the story with all kinds of scholarly technical considerations. It's another to tell a story in context, defining the eye of the storm from the context, focusing on the Bull's eyes of the  emerging story with awareness of the Mind's eye involving the observer in the story. The point is there's leverage in how stories connect to each other extrinsically and intrinsically, however different but related stories are, in a way always extrinsic to a specific story, exerting a sustained influence and a real pressure on the story at stake. Intrinsic stories are thus supported by these extrinsic stories that relate to them, that's where tensions drive the story. Only the right modeling can offer a valid comprehension of what's at stake by looking from outside in, thus in context while taking into account what's going on inside.


Now even if the independent variable is manipulated, and there are controls, and an effect observed, or multiple effects for that matter, the story is in all the qualifications that serve as a context to the story, and determine how the story will be used with many other stories. And that's the ultimate goal of research, for the results to be used in a meaningful way. The option is to connect the specific research to other research. However, in reality it's an infinite maze of research that is challenging to connect, which ensues into considerations going all azimuths, and that is said to be good, with the benefit of diversity, and thus many breakthroughs. But what we really see is a lot of confusion, replication, chaos, a real mess, that embroils the social sciences in countless publications and theories leading the practitioner to forge its own way with remote inspiration from all this literature. Or sometimes, there's the temptation to espouse a theory at the expense of others, with lack of flexibility to deal with reality.

Diversity is great in research  and very fruitful, but some kind of order helps determine domains of attractions in the chaos and leads to relevant methods to deal with the relativity and navigate the complexity for avenues of progress in the interventions. So it would be great to engage the research into the stories at stake while pursuing authentic scientific explorations, and I mean engaging the stories while manipulating the variables, in a way that pursues the intricacies of the story as the ultimate goal while making sense of the interactions in an articulate way with the relevant methodologies used in context, mixed methods, but really Dynamic Mixed Methods. There are two ways to do so: 1) Either go with the usual perspective of focusing on the effects of manipulating the Independent variable and analyzing results in order to place the dependent variables in context, but in the process bringing results from other such studies and looking at interactions, so as to more clearly tell the story of emerging and/or evolving situations

Or 2) Another option would be to use a checklist of stories as an independent variable and find ways to consider looking at different conditions emerging into evolving stories as dependent variables. As in fact, there's always a story with the independent variable, really many stories, that are left out of the picture for the sake of theorizing or some kind of experiment. And the option there would also be to look at the effects of manipulating many independent variables at the same time or in any order throughout the research, and instead of looking for such precise meaningless results, go after the story as complicated as it can be, getting the zest of its complexity. Now the results may not be as precise with lots of considerations, but may be elaborate and closer to reality and find their validity and reliability in their connections with relevant stories.


BODIES OF STORIES ARTICULATED AS CHECKLISTS OF STORIES

It's one thing to have have all of these encyclopedia of different fields and engines of research that help explore the literature, it's another to have the literature organized into systematic checklists curated by specialists with inputs from the researchers themselves. Public checklists would be accessed by researchers in order to register their research. And more specialized and private checklists would be edited by editorial boards deciding on the researchers' inputs. We are not talking here about special editions of academic journals on specific subjects, but something close to it, where all the relevant research about the subject is organized in a systematic way. And we are also not talking about handbooks, but we are talking about Constellations of Staircase Checklists of Stories looking at the intricate connections and Interactions, and even how they relate to other Constellations.


In that way, the Hovering Eye of the Storm theory can look at stories in more elaborate contexts, and work on the connections and the interactions, while adding to the wealth of such existing checklists, and growing a body of knowledge that can readily be used by practitioners, reflected upon, as they are giving feedback to the different checklists that they use. The Bull's Eyes theory would find meaning in considering many phenomena as eventual or virtual contexts may be compared readily for specific stories emerging and/or evolving. The Mind's Eye theory could look at phenomena with a bird's eye and check for domains of attractions and also extend the vision for alternate explanations while foraging not only for details but also for the larger picture. What's at stake here is not only the issue of replicating research that don't really add to the knowledge base, but also moderating biases, blind spots, and mediating the understanding of the weight of interactions on specific phenomena.

That's the way of the future in the Social Sciences
